Future computer engineers?!?

Today the kindergarten students from Mrs Lowes class came to our room to teach us how to "code". All across North America people were participating in a hour of coding challenge.  Celebrities, sports pros, even the president of the United States participated. We had a lot of fun working together to learn about coding.

Eric Carle Inspiration

Eric Carle

We studied the work of author illustrator Eric Carle.  We loved his illustrations.  They had a lot of texture and were very interesting to look at.  We were inspired to try some texture art of our own.  We used a bunch of different tools to apply paint to colored paper.  We learned about different techniques to make different patterns and designs.
Then we looked in the books to find an animal that we liked and we tried to make one that was a little bit the same but a little bit different.

We hope you enjoy viewing our textured animal masterpieces.

Santa Has A new Ride!

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells,
Jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to make
Santa a new sleigh!

We read a story about Santa having a whole mess of problems the day before Christmas.  He lost his boots, got the sack stuck in the door, and finally when he was just about to take off the sleigh got stuck in the snow.  We came up with some very kind ideas about how we could help but the best idea was to make him a new sleigh because we have been learning all about materials and have a whole bunch of beautiful stuff to create with!  We tested the materials came up with the design criteria and researched different sleigh designs.  Then we created!

Next step… Testing them out!
Stay tuned!!!

Art smart!

We transformed our classroom into an art studio. We used paint, paper and a variety of different unexpected tools to create texture on the page just like our inspiration Eric Carle. Stay tuned for the final product!

Exploring Larger Numbers

We spent time today exploring numbers above 10. We made towers to show numbers and then added more to make the number higher or took off blocks to make the number smaller. Then we challenged our friends to build the "tower plans" we wrote for them.  Some of the higher numbers were hard to hold on to!!!

Concert Information

Room 14 will be preforming a Chinese New Year song and dance.  The students will need to wear white tops and black bottoms.  We will have a costume (a red sash and gold belt provided by school) to put over our white shirt and black bottom.  I am going to be making a special fan for each child to hold and could use some help assembling them. If you can volunteer some time to cut and glue let me know asap.  Thanks!  It's going to be a great show!

Concert Songs

We have begun to practice for our winter concert!  Our concert is on Dec 17 at 1:30 (k-5) and again at 7:00(K-3). Room 14 will be singing the pirate song and a Chinese New Year song.  We will be preforming a dance with our Chinese New Year song as well.  Some of the children in the room have speaking parts that they will be rehearsing.  It is going to be amazing! Please follow this link to hear the songs and practice at home.

Beautiful stuff!

We have been learning about the characteristics of objects and materials. We have been collecting all sorts of stuff to design and create with. We sorted the objects, classified and described the different colors, textures, sizes, shapes and materials. Then the creativity started to flow... Here are a few shots of the beginning of the fun....

Animal Environments

We spent time learning to use scientific inquiry to learn about Manitoba animals.  We learned about appearance, habitat, diet, babies, and enemies.  Then we got to apply this knowledge when creating an environment for our animal that met all of its needs. (Food water and shelter).

House is a House for Me!

We have been learning all about houses. We learned that they are for shelter and that animals need homes too. Our houses are made out of materials such as wood and brick. We also noticed that if you think about it hard a lot of things can be houses for things...but a house is a house for me! It inspired a lot of creativity. We wrote house stories about mischief making house pets.  We investigated animal homes and we used a variety of building materials to create houses with our friends.

Germ proof!

We have been learning about germs in room 14.   We discussed what germs are, how they effect us, how they spread and how to protect ourselves.  We watched a video about germs and were shown how to effectively wash our hands. Then we had some fun with "pretend germ lotion" and used the glitter bug machine to check if we washed our hands well enough to get the pretend germs off.   We were surprised to see that some people washed very well but some people needed to spend more time scrubbing.

Research: Baby Animals

Today during our research time we investigated animal babies.  We learned to look in the table of contents for key words. Then we searched for the page and looked through our information for the word "born" or "hatched".   We watched a video about a rescued baby bat, and we talked about the importance of not touching the baby if we find one in nature.

Living and Non-living

We learned the characteristics of living things.  Living things can grow, have babies, change, and need food to stay alive.

Counting on...

Today we practiced a very important math skill -counting on.   We worked with a partner so that we could help each other learn and check each others work. We are getting really good at "talking like teachers" and sharing our "smarts".

Bus ridership

We spent some time learning about bus safety with Bus driver Bob.  Do you know all the bus safety rules? Just ask us-we are experts!
