inspired by the snow!!'

We were very excited to write about the snow!

So much snow!!!

We read another good story about snow today! It sure would be nice if it would stop for s little while... or so I think.... the kids disagree!!! Let it snow !!!

Blizzard!!!

We have a hands on understanding of the word blizzard! We read a story about a boy who lived through a blizzard in 1978. The story had drawn illustrations but it was non-fiction.

wow! We had a Special Guest!

Today we got to meet award winning author and illustrator Jon Klassen. He read us some of his stories and showed us how to draw some of his favourite characters.  We practiced drawing with him. He even gave us a sneak peek at a new book he worked on that isn't even in stores yet!

Research in Action

We have begun our independent research projects. The students are very excited to get a chance to test out their new research skills. Each child has chosen one wild animal from a Manitoba environment to learn more about. They will be thinking about its appearance, habitat, diet, enemies, babies and fun facts.  Then we will design and build a diorama depicting the animals natural habitat.  A note was sent home about supplies.  Please collect them and send them in by Wed.  Apparently we may be getting a blizzard by the end of the week....

The Integrated Arts

We had s special guest in our room this week. Her name was Leanne and she was a storyteller.   She shared stories about the 7 teachings. We learned about respect, wisdom, humility, honesty, love, truth and courage.  We heard her tell animal stories but we learned that these words and their message can help us be the best we can be.  Annnd we had a lot of fun acting out the stories!!!

A Poppy is To Remember

We have been learning all about peace. What peace feels like and looks like, how it sounds and how we can contribute to our world to promote peace. Today we took part in the Stevenson Remembrance Day service.  It was a Serious assembly and we were given lots to think about when a guest speaker shared his thoughts on peace and the military's role in bringing peace to our world.

Learning Internet Safety and research skills

We are learning different ways do research while we study bats. So far we have learned how to conduct an interview and we wrote about bats appearance. We used library books to find out about bay habitats. We watched an educational video to learn about how bats eat. Today we learned safe internet rules and used the internet to research about bat babies. Soon we will be publishing our very first non fiction information book - all about Bats!

Remembrance Day Assembly

Halloween was a howl!

We had a lot of fun on Halloween day. We talked about the celebration and family traditions and we participated in a few traditions of our own in room 14. We carved pumpkins and counted the seeds to see which one had the most. Good thing we know how to estimate and count by 10 because it would have taken us till Christmas to count all of the seeds!!! Then we had a blast while we boogied at the dance a thin. The prizes will be announced soon. Stay tuned! Finally we learned about good manners at a buffet type party and we had snacks and visited  . It was a wonderful day! You can see all the fun in our instagram account. Check it out!

Plants in Fall

We read a story today about a tree that got us thinking about plants in the Fall. We used some of our Fall books to research what do other plants do in the Fall. We completed some shared writing to record our findings. Then we made a Fall tree like the one in the story.

Halloween Patterns

We are learning how to sort and pattern. We learned that the pert of a pattern that repeats is called the core and it can be labelled with letters to make it easier to read. The letters come from the sorting that we do before we pattern. We can sort by size, shape, color or characteristics that are the same. Today we made three porous so we started making ABC patterns.

Our Reading Tool kit

We have been learning a bunch of strategies that we can use to help ourselves be better readers.  We know actions and rhymes for each one to help make it easy to remember them.

Teaching and listening

We are working to become better listeners so we can be wise and teach others. To do this we need to really pay attention to each other and respect what others think and say. We have a sharing time at the end of the day where we talk about the day. We share the good things that make us happy and what we are proud of.  It's also a time to talk about how we can make tomorrow even better. Today we made our own talking stick to use while we are sharing. We decorated it with symbols to remind us of important things.  The yellow yarn is to remind us to be happy. The red reminds us about kindness and caring for each other. The white is for peace. We all like a peaceful place for learning and the brown reminds us of nature and how important nature is.  We put feathers so we remember to speak softly and use kind words. We each chose a rock to decorate it with we glued them all together.  We added a piece of fuzzy at the top to remind us of how to treat others and the pine cone at the top reminds us we are all growing and learning together. Pretty amazing for 6 year olds!

The Leaves are Falling

We were inspired to create art to go along with the poem we have been practicing. We read poems together to practice our fluency and expression.

how does Fall Feel?

We explored our sense of touch and got to use it to feel textures common in Fall. How does Fall feel to you?

5 Senses of Fall

We have been learning about our 5 senses. We used our senses to investigate the changes that occur in Fall. We enjoyed being scientists to investigate what we smell and taste in Fall. We baked apple pie together to demonstrate what Fall smells and tastes like.Fall is pretty yummy! What do you think Fall smells and tastes like?
