Family fun on a frosty night

Thank you so much to the families who braved the weather to come out to the I Love To Read Family Read-In. The kids enjoyed some snuggle time with their families and got a chance to read some of the wonderful books that our amazing librarian Mrs Wood has bought for our library.  It is so wonderful to see families reading together and sharing the love of books.  It was also a great opportunity to visit with old friends and make new ones.  We got treated to an excellent dramatic reading of Mud Puddle from a Robert Munsch character Jule Ann! She was wishing for no more mud puddles in the story... But I am sure many of the listeners would actually love to see a mud puddle or two these days.... Much more than a snow bank anyway!

Dress like your favourite story book character

There are some very creative minds in 14. We had a special day to dress like a character from our favorite books! Can you guess who these "characters" are?  ( they looked so awesome!)

Learning from a music magician...

Today we spent time with a very talented musician...our very own vice principal - Mr Miller!  We came up with the idea of creating a song about the 5 senses.  We invited Mr Miller to come and teach us how to use GarageBand to make the music to go with our lyrics.  Making the lyrics was so easy because we have been reading a lot of Dr Seuss books and they have a lot of rhymes!  So we are excellent rhyme makers! Adding the drums and the base came after we had an idea for the tune. After that we had some fun recording (and changing) our voices.  Voila... We have a song!  Now we think we might even try to add in a dance and create an actual music video!!!! Stay tuned....

100 day

It was officially 100 days of school! We had a great day celebrating.  Some of us even dressed up as 100 year olds!  We all ended up with wrinkles but they were definitely laugh lines!! The kiddos got to take part in a whole bunch of activities that had them thinking of 100 in many different ways.  They noticed that when you count to 100 by ones it takes a very long time, and it is easy to get mixed up,  so we devised a plan to get there faster And make it easier) we counted by 2's, 5's, 10's and even 25's!!! As they were doing the skip counting, these math magicians noticed that all of the counting they did was actually just counting patterns..."this is so easy!!" they all said ( I love those self-discovery moments!) Then one of my "wonderers" challenged the rest of the class to come up with 100 words about Room 14.  Within minutes they had a plethora of words that tell all about what we value and who we are in Room 14.  I absolutely love spending time with these amazing kiddos! I'm just wishing I could have another hundred days with them!!!

Try!

T R Y …. This is one of the words we value the most in Room 14.  Today we found a olympic video clip that really made us believe in the word TRY.

Cold Winter Nights

Well, something good has come from the never ending cold nights that we have had.... Beautiful art! Here is a shot of our winter moons.  We made them to look as if you are laying on the ground in the snow looking up at the trees and the cool winter moon.

Thomas' Snowsuit. Or is it?

Our author of the month is Robert Munsch. He has written a lot if very funny stories (they also have a sneaky way of teaching you something while you are laughing).  Today we read Thomas' snowsuit and we think Robert Munsch was trying to be funny but also telling us about respecting teachers and parents.  After we read the book we were inspired to make our own snowsuit stories so we started by making the cover with a kid in a snowsuit. Mrs Hamm had a way of teaching something while we were having fun making the plastercine person....we were actually practicing the names of the major body parts!!! ( little did they know....;). It was a lot if fun. So far they are looking really good but stay tuned because we are not done yet!

February Assembly Stars!

Today we got to be centre stage at the I love to Read assembly!  We did a sound effect poem called The Crocodile.  The audience really enjoyed our performance! We smiled a lot but just remember ... Never smile at a crocodile!
