Healthy living poplet

We would like to share a Popplet with you. We created this graphic organizer to sort out all the information that we know/have learned about healthy living. We were very excited to see just how much we were able to put on the poplet and how big it got!

Wash away winter ... Blow in some spring!

Today we read another Lio Lionni book. It was titled "A Busy Year" and it was about two little mice who befriend a tree and visit her month after month as the seasons change.  The children made many connections to other stories as well as personal connections as we read....one of the very "interesting" things they noticed was on the March page in the story it was raining and there was ....NO SNOW!!   Wouldn't that be nice???? After we read we decided to bring some spring into the school and cheer things up a big so we created spring trees with buds and blossoms just like in the story, but instead of using collage like Lio Lionni (we have already explored that medium) we used a water wash technique. First we washed on blue, yellow and purple to create a background and then we used a blow painting technique to create bare tree branches. Finally we used q-tips to dot on buds and blossoms.  The results are breathtaking.... Enjoy a taste of spring!'

Comparing numbers

We are going to be spending some time building larger numbers and comparing them.  Today we started by building number trains and comparing which train had more and which train had less. Then we chose the correct symbol to use to show what we had discovered and we used the App explain everything to share our thinking. You can click the link below to view a sample of the thinking and teamwork involved! Enjoy!

Cooperation in Action

Continuing on with our idea that everyone can teach someone today we put that theory into action.  We created our very own food group rainbows.  The children were given books to read and reference. They worked together, under their own direction, to read the information,  color the rainbow appropriately, and cut and sort the foods.  They had to assign roles, get along, make decisions and explain their thinking to each other.  Finally they came back together as a whole group to present their completed projects to the class.  Just think ....if they can do all of that in grade one ...ohhhh, the possibilities are endless!!!!

Hands on Problem solving

Today we really got our "hands on" our problem solving. We wondered how many fingers are in our room. Then we discovered that we could count them in a bunch if different ways...1's, 5's, and 10's. We estimated that there might be 160 and we found out that we have 200!  That's a lot of fingers

A Promise is a Promise read in Inuktitut (+playlist)

Room 14 got a very special treat this week. We had a visiting teacher join us from Hall Beach, Nunavut. She shared a lot of information about her culture and what life is like where she lives. We learned that it is a little bit the same and a little bit different. Today she read us a story in her language, Inuktitut. What a special treat from a special visitor! Thank you Jeela!

Today I introduced the Science lesson on touch in a very interesting way…. I recorded my voice using an app called Tellagami. The kiddos were really listening to Mrs Hamm today! :)
