Math games galore!
We are learning a bunch of new math games that will help us strengthen our number concepts. So far we have learned "Aces Out","Go Fish" and "Kings Rule". All of these games help us recognize numbers and put the numbers in order. We would love to teach you!!! (All you need is a deck of cards and two dice) Playing number games at home will really help reinforce the things learned at school....and it is fun!!!!

We are all smart!
In class today we had a talk about how everyone is different but we are all special..we are all smart. We came up with a list of words that we could use to describe what we are. (helpful, special, strong, outdoorsy, good reader, etc). Then we talked about how each of those things that we are make us smart in a different way (multiple intelligence). We can all teach each other things and help each other grow and learn. We are a team in Room 14 and we all need to work together to make our team stronger and SMARTER! We wrote a book about our smarts! It is called "What I am.." Here is the link.. http://msty.me/16AdnXr
I hope you enjoy!

Library training!!!
Today we had our first library class to take books out. Mrs. Wood showed us how to use a shelf marker to save the spot that the book came from. We learned that each book has a special number that is like its "address". Later in the day we practiced our own address. We talked about how important it is to know your own personal information. ( your child should have their full name, address and home phone number memorized)

A Bundle of fun!
It was our tenth day of school! We have been putting a straw in the pocket each day to learn about place value. Today the digits for 10 wouldn't fit in the ones pocket so we had to figure out a way to show ten by moving the "ten stick" to the next pocket on the chart. (Thanks Ashton for that great idea!) then we bundled up the straws and moved them over too. We got to make a bundle and do the "bundle dance". I am going to post the video we made of the "bundle dance" as soon as I can, ( I am waiting on a few media release forms) but in the meantime you could ask your child to teach it to you!
We also used a new app called MY STORY to create a book about dots, after reading the story 10 Black Dots. I have sent a link via email to the parents so that you can see our book.
Oh yeah and we also painted...
Counting, dancing, painting, writing, reading -
It was a busy day in Room 14!
We might all need an early bedtime...I know I do! :)

Today we learned about the letter L. Mrs Hamm was reading a book about ABC's and she made us laugh by saying "lmno" like it was one letter- all "smooshed" together. It isn't one letter, if you say it right, it is 4 letters .... L, M, N, O. We used the smart board to make words and pictures that started with L and then we put them in the barrel with the other L words. Then we printed the letter L and practiced making it the right way. It starts at the top and stops at the bottom.

Exploring Numbers
We were number builders today. We used counters to show (represent) different numbers. We all worked on the same number at the same time but when we shared our thinking about how we made the number, we found out that some of us made it the same way and some of us thought of a different way to make the number!
Sorting, counting and having fun!
Yesterday we were using a lot of skills in math...(but we were having fun!) We sorted, counted and talked about which colour had the most
and which colour had the least.

We love art! We are all real artists! We read a book called "Ish". It was about a boy who didn't think he was an artist until his sister told him she loved his art. Then he felt like a real artist. After we read the story we all got to show that we were real artists and we got to use brand new markers. We all drew different things. We drew a farm (Krystal) , a rainbow with a pot of gold (Piper), smiling moons and suns (Sara), friends (Delilah), a big rain cloud (Alea), a city of skyscrapers (Ashton), and many other things. Art is fun to make.
Adopt a School
Stevenson School Library has had the good fortune of being adopted by Chapters Polo Festival for the 2013 Adopt a School campaign. It will run in-store from September 15 to October 5. We are looking for your help of meeting our goal of raising money for 257 books, or one new book for every student in the school.
- Follow this link - http://bit.ly/1dql4bh - to adopt Stevenson School. This is a FREE action and will help earn books for the library. From here you can also help spread the word on Facebook, Twitter and by email. If you have multiple email addresses, you can use them to adopt more than once.
At Stevenson School, we believe that fun, quality literature fosters a life long love of reading. Please help us fill our library with books that will impact every child in our school. Know that Stevenson staff and students are grateful for your help.

Today we read the book called Curious George goes to School. We found out it had 3 parts. In the beginning George went to school. In the middle he got in trouble and at the end he saved the day by finding the lost picture. After we read the book we put the story back together and we learned how to use glue and scissors the grade one way!

A Good Fit!
BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS! Today we sorted out our classroom library books. We made labels for each basket so we could find the books easily. Then we had a talk about what a "GOOD FIT BOOK" is. Mrs Hamm brought in a bunch of shoes and we tried them on. We all need shoes to help us. Some of the shoes fit us and others didn't fit at all. The shoes we need can't be too big or too small. They have to be just right- a good fit! Some shoes were for a specific purpose and others were good for a variety of things. If you are going to a party you need fancy shoes and if you are playing soccer you need soccer shoes. We talked about how that is the same for books - a good fit can't be too hard. It can't be too easy. Books need to interest us and they have to be just right...A GOOD FIT!

Here we are! Grade 1 Room 14 has begun. We had fun on our first day of school. We read books, we painted, we coloured and we played outside. Some of us got pretty tired and some of us got pretty sweaty. We made a promise to make our room the best room ever! We promised to be kind and respectful. We will share, listen to each other and we will have fun!
